A new study, published in the journal Urolodology, found that sildenafil was effective in treating erectile dysfunction. Researchers, from the University of British Columbia, analysed more than 100,000 patients over the age of 40 and found it was effective in up to 80% of cases.
“Our results indicate that sildenafil can be used safely in men with erectile dysfunction,” lead author and research assistant Professor Mark B. Greenfield said in a statement.
“These findings highlight the safety and efficacy of sildenafil in treating erectile dysfunction,” Professor Greenfield said.
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor used to treat erectile dysfunction in men with a male hypoactive sexual desire disorder, a condition in which the body does not respond to sexual stimulation. Sildenafil works by blocking an enzyme called PDE5. The enzyme is responsible for the degradation of cGMP. CGMP causes smooth muscle relaxation and blood flow to the penis, which leads to an erection. Sildenafil is available as tablets and as an oral preparation. Sildenafil tablets are taken on an empty stomach, or when a man is sexually aroused, and is taken as needed, about 30 minutes before sexual activity.
The research found that sildenafil was effective for up to 80% of cases.
“This is the first time this type of medication has been proven to be effective in treating erectile dysfunction. It is very encouraging,” Professor Greenfield said.
The study included patients with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction who were using sildenafil at a dose of 20 mg three times a day, as well as those who had a dose of 25 mg three times a day.
Dr. J. M. Lee, a senior clinical lecturer at the University of British Columbia and Professor of Sexual Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, said there was “no significant difference” in treatment effects between the two doses.
“It is important to note that these results were obtained in a small population of men, which means that it is not possible to draw definitive conclusions from these results,” Dr. Lee said.
